GX470 Navigation + DVD Bypass ProcedureDisclaimer: I in NO WAY condone watching DVD movies while driving. If you are performing this mod for this reason, please let me know when and where you drive so I can stay the hell off the road. I performed this modification so those passengers in the front seat could enjoy the DVD and have control over the screen for children in the rear who cannot yet operate a remote control. I do not find this any more of a distraction than the NAV system. Tools you will need: 1. Wire cutters/Wire Stripper 2. Pry tool (I used a small putty knife) 3. Drill (if you are installing the switch) 4. Socket Wrench 5. Twist Connectors, Electrical Tape, or Solder/Soldering iron if you feel fancy 6. Light gauge wire Time Required: 45 minutes Total Cost: $6.79 from Radio Shack (including switch and wire) Radio shack switches link below: Part 275-692 and 275-694 http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jspproductId=2062524&cp
Follow the instructions below are for the 2003 - 2006 GX470Click here to go to the 07+ instructionsStep 4: (2003-2006 models)
Use socket wrench (you may need a 4" extension) to
unscrew the 4 hex bolts/screws holding the Nav system
in place. Remove the entire screen unit by pulling back toward you. You do not
have to pull it out very far to have full access to the rear to get to the
wires. I put a towel on my shifter to rest the unit against. There are (4) wire
harness connections to the back of the screen. You want to remove the second
one (circled) to access the appropriate wires.
Step 5: (2003-2006 models) The two wires you need access to are the Violet wire with red stripe on pin #5 and the light green wire on pin #13. If you will not be using a switch, cut the violet/red wire and tape the ends, then cut the light green wire and ground the part that goes to the screen. This will simulate the parking brake. Note: The Violet wire with red is not real noticeable. The wires also look way bigger in the pictures. Just count the pins and you will figure out the correct wires. It is very easy. However, 2005+’ers will see three plugs in the back of the NAV. Within the white plug closest to the end, contains a violet (purple) looking wire with a red stripe and a light green wire. Those are definitely your target wires. The one that is closest to the passenger seat. It is the only one that contains a violet (purple) wire with a red stripe. This plug will also contain the LIGHT green wire.
If you choose to use a switch, run 4 wires (2 for each side
of the wires) to the blank next to "Second Start". I chose to use
twist connectors on this install to make it easier to revert back to factory
settings when I return my lease. "A" shows my splice on the screen side, "B" shows the splice on the vehicle side,
and "C" shows my 4-wire run (one cable) which goes to the blank.
Step 6: (2003-2006 models)
Install Switch. You can use a simple double-pole,
double-throw switch from Radio Shack (about $3). They fit perfectly in the
blank (there are several types). I drilled just a round hole just slightly
larger than 1/2". If you drill it exact, the nut on the switch will hold
it in perfectly. My switch is below. Wire the leads from the screen to the "common"
section of the switch. On one side of the switch, wire the corresponding wires
from the vehicle side so when the switch is "on" the screen is set to
factory default. On the other side of the switch (green wire only for e-brake),
wire a ground wire. I used one of the screws on the side of the radio to make
for a short run. Note: Even though I used a 4-cable run, you need a 5th lead for the ground wire to ground the e-brake lead. You should wire the switch like this: violet/red strip from car - | - light green from car violet/red strip from nav - | - light green from nav empty - | - ground wire to car
Throwing the switch up reconnects the
original factory wires.
Here is my completed switch:
Step 7: Reassemble everything in reverse. This part should take all of 5 minutes. Lexus makes everything so that it snaps right back together nicely. Follow the instructions below are for the 2007+ GX470Step 4:
Looking at the harnesses at the back of the Navigation screen you will see the connector that you will need to modify, it is the one closest to the Driver side of the Navigation screen. You will see the harness of interest circled in red below: ![]() Step 6: Below is picture of the Blank next to the 2nd STRT button with the Radio Shack switch installed in it. I used a drill to create the hole for the switch. I don't remember what side I used but it was greater than 1/2". Below are links to the a few of the different types of switch you may used for this MOD. I am not good at soldering so I used the quick disconnectors. ![]() Step 7: Below pictures are of the wires you need to cut. First of all I cut my wires very far from the white Navigation plug. I decided to cut very far away from the plug so that if the Lexus technician go searching far an issue with the Navigation system or radio he does not notice any strange wires close to the Navigation screen. Please pay attention to which green wire you cut. There are several light and dark green wires in the plug closes to the driver side. Cut the light green wire with the brown rings or dots. ![]() Step 8: Below is a picture showing the routing of the wires to the switch and to the radio for grounding. ![]() Step 9: Below is a picture showing the routing of the wires to the switch and to the radio for grounding. Directly below this picture is another picture showing you exactly how to connect these wires to the switch ![]()

Here is some additional information that I found is useful to most Lexus vehiclesTo access the diagnostic menus, there are 2 ways. First way: with the key on, press and hold the info button, and turn the lights on and off 3 times. Second way: press the display button, then press the top left corner of the window under the display icons, then the bottom left corner. do this 3 times. Unlocking the Navigation(to enter addresses while Driving)
Note: This needs to be performed every time you shut off the car.
Once the Override is activated, the nav
system and phone system can be operated while the vehicle is in motion. The
system returns to its default settings each time the car is started. There are 5 different procedures here. These 5 procedures are unique, You will need to find the right one by completing the steps indicated below. I have included some notes right below the procedure number to help you indentify which procedures might apply.
WARNING: Be safe - only use this when a passenger can safely input addresses or phone numbers. The service menu contains other options that should only be used by a Lexus or Toyota service professional. Do not attempt to access the service menu if you are not a Lexus or Toyota service professional.
